ABSTRACT

Child labour is condemnable! Childhood should be about discovery, play, enjoyment and learning. In this chapter, we wish to expose the hidden practices many academics fail to see – the invisible child labour masked beneath tourism and hospitality apprenticeship or family-owned tourism businesses. We will also bring about the issues of seasonality and co-sharing space with tourists, which makes many children unwilling and unknowingly become “victims” of tourism activity that simultaneously contributes to and depletes their quality of life. For example, many highly seasonal tourism destinations are battered with enormous demand for accommodation facilities. Hence, many families offer their living space to tourists or invite them to co-share the place. Naturally, such activity will benefit the family financially, but it is currently a non-researched area as to how children feel about sharing their living space with strangers. In this chapter, we wish to raise awareness of similar cases that we know exist and are frequent in highly seasonal destinations.
