ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the tourism industry through the lens of its employment opportunities and weaknesses and how that influences children’s attitudes towards tourism. Many tourism destinations have suffered from staff shortages in hospitality and tourism in the recent decade. This worsened during the Covid-19 pandemic as many employees took up new opportunities outside of tourism and hospitality or migrated to their homeland. Children recognise that the industry creates employment opportunities. However, they also realise that work demands an all-day commitment and negatively affects family life. These perceptions made them indecisive or opposed to employment in tourism and hospitality. Such a perception certainly does little to change the view of tourism becoming a desired life orientation and a force for social change.
