ABSTRACT

The following exercises are inspired by Laban’s Shape Qualities, which are the pin, wall, ball, twist, and pyramid. There are many other shapes that can be practised that are not on Laban’s list of shapes, and it can be enjoyable exploring diverse shapes while vocalising, but it is important to initially try simple, standard shapes. These shapes can be easily workshopped and they’re a brilliant way to easily enter a character both physically and vocally. It is important to reiterate that the body and voice (the physiovocal instrument) are one entity, and the voice should not be just an “add on” but should be integrated with the body and associated movements, shapes, and qualities.
