ABSTRACT

Chapter 8 provides a concise conclusion to the book in three sections. First, the aims and scope of the book are summarised, alongside a rationale for the use of sociotechnical imaginaries and political and social history as the underlying theoretical frameworks. Such a combination, it is suggested, allows the various chapters of this book to connect future visions of artificial intelligence (AI) and education with China’s past, thus grounding often uncritical assumptions of data-driven futures with underlying political dynamics and long-standing social patterns. The second part of the chapter summarises the resulting analysis from each chapter, and underscores the central thematic contributions from the book. The final section suggests future areas of research that might be approached through the lenses of sociotechnical imaginaries and political histories, focusing on AI ethics as a prominent area in which China appears to adopting a leading role.
