ABSTRACT

This chapter provides the key findings from individual factors as well as the multiple hierarchical regression of a content analysis of broadcasters’ nonverbal neutrality during coverage of the six deadliest shootings in U.S. history from 1999 to 2021. The primary results indicate that social-level factors, such as role performance, framing, topic, and source, are the highest predictors of nonverbal neutrality, while individual-level factors vary more based on the timeline of the event. The primary purpose of the chapter is to utilize these and other findings to provide a way of measuring and predicting nonverbal neutrality in journalism.
