ABSTRACT

The concluding chapter succinctly reiterates the main findings of the book. It shows that the discourse of freedom of the seas emerged after the Second World War and is intimately entwined with the United States’ material naval preponderance and desire for a global maritime sphere of influence. The conclusion re-presents the finding that contemporary US freedom of the seas discourse is predicated on Mahanian sea control precepts and discusses the implications for contemporary Sino-American competition.
