ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the key trends that emerged through the quantitative analysis of news articles about extended reality. It explores the volume of coverage, the main topics of articles, which applications are mentioned, news sources and practices that indicate native advertising. It shows that the news outlets tend to focus on the commercial side of extended reality and the creators of extended reality hardware and software have a significant impact on the news discourse. The chapter discusses how such news can aid the diffusion of the technology, supporting the interests of the elite companies that are involved in this industry rather than the general public. It ends by considering how the commercial pressures journalists face may have impacted this coverage.
