ABSTRACT

The principal methods of integrative transactional analysis (TA) are enquiry, attunement and involvement. The combination of these in integrative TA creates a sensitive, empathic therapy. Enquiry is done from a position of respect for the client and their process and from a place of genuine interest in the client. The purpose of enquiry is to generate increasing awareness and to promote internal and interpersonal contact (ibid.). Attunement is a key therapeutic technique and begins with an empathic resonance with the client, but is added to in that the therapist remains open to responding accordingly to the client. Involvement is a less tangible and more attitudinal therapist activity. Involvement requires the therapist to be willing to be impacted by their client, and the therapist's commitment to do their utmost to help each client. A commitment to continual professional development is another feature of involvement.
