ABSTRACT

The drama triangle describes three psychological roles that people adopt in the course of their games. The roles are: Persecutor, Rescuer and Victim. As the drama triangle is a method of the game analysis, it can be used in identification and analysis of the transference and countertransference dynamics aspects of the therapeutic relationship. Using the drama triangle to analyse the transference/countertransference provides the therapist with a simple but the rapid method of exploring the subtle relationship dynamics unfolding in the therapy. Generally, positions on the drama triangle are not static, and at some point in the process of a game, a switch of roles occurs. It is important that the therapist notices their own internal shift in relation to the drama triangle positions. The greater self-awareness is likely to increase the therapist's sensitivity and responsiveness to their clients.
