ABSTRACT

Drivers are also culturally embedded in that they are all behaviours which are present, valued, and stroked to some degree in most (western) cultures, and, as such, each driver will be more or less present for everyone. Because of this, Transactional Analysis therapists tend to be cautious in dismantling them, instead, focusing more on increasing the client's awareness of their own drivers, and encouraging them to think about whether they need the driver. In Kahler's original model, drivers were shown in brief clusters of behaviours which a person displayed immediately before a person moved into ‘script’ behaviour or feelings. Furthermore, given the cultural and social desirability of driver patterns, and the influence of these on how individuals engage with others and the world.
