ABSTRACT

The design and introduction of behavioural contracts for specific between session behaviours or activities (‘homework’) are a common and highly recommended strategy used in TA therapy. All behavioural contracts that are set should relate in some way to the client's case formulation or key script issues and need to be integrated into a coherent treatment plan. This chapter suggests that the therapist keep some index cards, or slips of paper available, so that any homework contracts can be written down and the client can take them away to reduce the possibility that they will forget the contract. In the follow-up discussion of homework in subsequent sessions, it is advisable for the therapist to actively avoid taking a Parental position, but to simply stroke the client for task completion and then invite them to discuss their experiences and reactions to the task.
