ABSTRACT

The process of redecision is essentially re-evaluating and discarding or changing a script belief, such as ways of relating, behaviour, or typical emotional expression. Memory reconsolidation has been developed into a therapy approach called coherence therapy. The way memory reconsolidation is used in therapy is first by identifying an implicit learning, and bringing it into the client's awareness. It is important to note that the disconfirming experience can be something relatively small, if it violates the expectation and/or the implicit emotional learning, while the belief is in conscious awareness, the old script belief will be changed, or redecided. One way of incorporating this into a treatment plan would be to invite a client to reflect on their identified script beliefs and injunctions after sessions, and to pay particular attention to times when they would usually impact on them negatively. Sometimes, only one or two disconfirming experiences are sufficient.
