ABSTRACT

There is a range of considerations the therapist needs to take into account in ensuring there is sufficient protection for their client and also for managing their own needs. Resourcing themselves as a therapist is a vital aspect of protection. Obtaining adequate and regular ongoing supervision is a key part of ensuring there is sufficient support and protection available for the therapist, but also for the client in terms of quality assurance and the ethical management of the therapist's caseload. Transactional analysis therapists resource themselves through their own engagement in personal therapy, which seeks to resolve aspects of their own script which may get in the way of their work. The pacing and timing of the work are important also in providing protection. The pull to delve too deeply too quickly can be strong in early sessions. Diagnosis is also a central aspect of determining client protection.
