ABSTRACT

Mental imagery is known to be an effective tool in the psychotherapy of mood and anxiety disorders. The Gouldings used different variations on mental imagery techniques to address traumatic early scenes, many of which involved some element of changing or rescripting the original scene. Imagery rescripting is a recognized technique for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder. The calm place technique, which was originally developed in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy can be easily integrated into TA therapy for its usefulness in soothing the Child ego state. Mental imagery techniques can also be used to help clients to develop healthier Structuring and Nurturing Parent ego states, by drawing on experiences and memories they already have. One procedure is a variation on resource development and installation used in EMDR, which is known to be effective in the stabilization phase of therapy for people with complex trauma.
