ABSTRACT

Transactional analysts commonly audio-record sessions with clients, particularly trainee transactional analysts, who are seeking to obtain audio recordings suitable for presenting in the Certified Transactional Analyst examination. Listening to audio recordings of sessions is often fruitful in enabling the therapist to notice patterns of language and how they are making their interventions, which is information which they can use to considerably sharpen up their skills. Tony Rousmaniere has developed a solid, research-based method for improving therapeutic skills centred around the notion of deliberate practice. His website has many useful resources and instructional videos to help explain the background and method of deliberate practice. Essentially the method requires the therapist to identify a specific skill or cluster of skills they want to systematically improve. This could be identified by reflection on practice, from reviewing audio recordings or through supervision.
