ABSTRACT

Most people dream at least four times per night but most people remember only a small bit of each of their dreams, as the latent content of each dream is disguised via the processes of the dream work (i.e., condensation and displacement). However, occasionally a significant amount of latent content will break through the censor relatively undisguised. This typically occurs when a person is in distress and/or they have access to very primitive psychological defenses without the protection of more mature, sophisticated defenses. We have reviewed several presentations where the Consultant has understood a patient’s dreams. This has enabled the Consultant to deepen the Presenter’s understanding of aspects of their patient’s dynamics that had previously been unclear.
