ABSTRACT

This book presented a revised model of psychodynamic case formulation that encourages exploring the preconscious transactions as well as the dynamics of the Presenter/Consultant from the exact moment of initial presentation (including the first few words spoken) about the ‘case.’ Examples of my case formulation process came from many hours of supervision over five years. They demonstrate that while the parody of an ‘example’ of my supervisory work in the skit presented at the beginning of this book is silly and exaggerated, like many parodies, there is a grain of truth in that, while what I do might sometimes appear to seem like magic, what is occurring is that as the Teacher/Consultant I am simply following all of the threads of the therapist/Presenter as he/she presents the clinical interaction in the session to be understood. In all of the examples presented in this book, the identity of both the therapist/Presenter and the patient (or patient(s) the couple, family or therapy group) has been disguised, and the data about all members of this clinical encounter (except for me) have been altered to preserve anonymity, while not altering the essential elements of the dynamics, defensive structure, transference-countertransference, unconscious object relations, and preconscious transactions of the experience.
