ABSTRACT

The witness to the traffic accident or the shopkeeper who has just been robbed will both have a story to tell as to what they saw; or think they saw. Perception is one of those processes that goes on almost all the time, but in most cases the people are unaware of its operation. One of the best ways of illustrating the processes of perception is by reference to the Necker Cube A great deal of a police officer’s day-to-day work will involve keeping eyes and ears open, and accurately – or inaccurately – perceiving people and situations. One of the ways in which psychologists often demonstrate the process of perception is through the use of visual illusions. Perception operates largely without the reader being aware of it. It interprets and makes sense of information the people receive from the outside world.
