ABSTRACT

The chapter covers space projects of relevant actors. It does so from the perspective of global and several regional contexts. As per the theoretical framework, the terrestrial relations among states are crucial for their interactions in outer space and thus both of these dynamics must be established in order to properly understand the power interplay over celestial bodies. The chapter combines the proposed projects of the space powers towards the studied celestial bodies with the power dynamics that might affect their outcome. On the global level, this mainly includes the increasing divide between the democratic and autocratic space powers. In the relevant regions, the opportunities for collaboration and contest are much more varied. In this respect, even less developed space powers might in the end affect the settlement or mining projects through their spoiling capacity or via participation in collaborative projects. The chapter also includes a debate over the role of private actors that are generally strengthening in the domain.
