ABSTRACT

The logic behind the construction of the settlements themselves also needs to be presented. Understanding the infrastructural needs of the actual bases is key for analysing what is possible, and feasible and what choices are to be made regarding the permanent or semi-permanent settlements. Without understanding this issue, the scenarios might fall into a trap of science-fiction, rather than present plausible future developments. First, the chapter covers the infrastructure necessary for keeping these bases running and efficient. This way, we can better spot resources that the settlements need in order to be sustainable, thus highlighting some crucial potential points of contention. The second part develops possible reasons for constructing outposts on the studied bodies. Similar to Earth, facilities with different logic behind them tend to be more close/open to outside actors. Finally, the chapter evaluates possible internal political development in such settlements that helps us understand their possible behaviour and logic behind decision-making on the given body.
