ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors consider the literature review in the context of a qualitative research study and provide advice about how to develop a literature review that is broad, deep and critical. A good literature review is one which is conducted in an organized manner. It makes the processes undertaken for search and selection of studies clear to the reader. It relies upon sound, documented evidence from high-quality sources. While the role of the literature review is not merely to summarize each piece of literature, it is important for researchers to engage with the research they select in a critical way. The notion of suggesting a set of universal indicators of quality of qualitative research is fraught with difficulties. Finally, the authors describe processes for searching for as well as managing and organizing literature.
