ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors describe what focus group interviews are and they consider the situations in which they are an effective method of data collection. They also provide some basic information about designing focus group interview questions and protocols, as well as practical advice for addressing the challenges that may arise during focus group interviews. Finally, they describe the advantages and challenges of this data collection method. Understanding the difference between a focus group and a group interview, as well as an understanding of the relationship of those two data collection forms, can help researchers to understand the focus group interview. A focus group interview at its most fundamental level is a qualitative data collection method that researchers have employed with a number of the research approaches.
