ABSTRACT

The last chapter of this book analyzes on-screen multilingual interactions as filmic and narrative resources, shaped by presupposed human perceptive capabilities and an evolving array of cultural and technological audiovisual storytelling resources. The questions this chapter deals with are related to the main procedures and resources used to support the on-screen encounter of different languages and geo-cultural spaces in a single multilingual fiction show, as is the case with the use of media technologies as narrative devices. What could we learn from analyzing the adoption and adaptation of media technologies as narrative devices in multilingual series? What are the cinematic resources multilingual shows use to represent asynchronous spatiotemporal linguistic events? And what could we learn from the integration of soundtrack music and image in multilingual series? To answer these questions, the chapter directs attention to three central narrative and stylistic devices involved in multilingual series storytelling: media technologies as cultural and linguistic mediators, spatiotemporal compressors as multilingual storytelling devices, and soundtrack music as an ideological signifier.
