ABSTRACT

Most global environmental institutions are not housed within the structures of the United Nations, but the UN still plays important institutional roles. The United Nations Environment Programme coordinates UN environment action and catalyzes further environmental action internationally; it also helps manage a set of regional seas programs and serves as a Secretariat for many environmental treaties. The UN has also coordinated environmental conferences where agendas for international cooperation have been set. And UN commissions, including the High Level Political Forum for Sustainable Development, have contributed to the setting and implementation of global goals.
