ABSTRACT

This chapter elaborates on violence in educational settings such as schools. Students from minority and disadvantaged groups are also the victims of both physical and cognitive violence based on their social category. The trend of the education system to regulate the cognitive and social space of students is a new form of epistemic violence. The educational domain provides a platform for social mobility and social change. The current chapter takes the social psychology of power perspective to explore the construction of educational spaces which either facilitate or interrupt violence in schools. The role of authentic educational leaders and their transformation of power into empowerment will be understood in the context of schools. The effort is to highlight the mechanism of accountability to translate power into nurturance and empowerment for students from different backgrounds.
