ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the role of the Saxons in the Frankish civil war unleashed by the sons of Louis the Pious, as well as the Stellinga—a conservative Saxon rebel movement that sought to restore Saxon customs as they existed prior to the Frankish conquest. Debates surrounding the motivations for the Stellinga revolt are discussed, as are the ramifications of the revolt. The second part of the chapter transitions into an overview of key developments in Saxony following the suppression of the Stellinga, including economic developments; urbanization; ecclesiastical endeavors; militarization resulting from Viking, Slavic, and Magyar raids; and the advent of the Ottonian dynasty. Each of these developments is used to demonstrate the degree to which Saxony was transformed following their conquest and integration by the Frankish Empire.
