ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the nature of the support for the local area leaders of the Kairon and Rarewala factions from the villages of the Doraha-Payal-Sirhind area. The opposing paarti always assumed that there was a solidarity of interest between these two affinally connected families. Moreover, the two families visited one another regularly, and were clearly seen to be friendly. The support for Rarewala in the Doraha-Payal-Sirhind area mainly gathered around the person of Hardev S. Immediately after the 1947 riots, when Sikh refugees had been invited, in the name of religion, to pepsu, Hardev S. managed to allot stalls for selling goods in the market to some of the Sikhs who were given shelter at Doraha. A public bhog ceremony was performed at their expense in demonstration of their gratitude to Kulwant S., but it was also a demonstration of faction solidarity.
