ABSTRACT

“Twilight” highlights the stresses caused by the death of a woman’s husband in the depths of winter. Gray clouds congeal in the sky, like a mourning visage, unspeakably dim. Snow! It flies icy cold and hits the ground in desolation. In the distance, a gray procession wriggles, gradually approaching. There are four wrinkled bodies of different sizes wrapped in rags. Grandmother is hunching over, with traces of life engraved on her forehead. A north wind bullies her white hair. Hugging Pearl tightly in her arms, she walks haltingly. Changing positions all night, Aunt Hua just slept badly, and her heart is very empty, empty as if it has no blood. Now she has lost the focus of her whole life; even the instinct to sleep seems to be lost. Just now sleepiness is drowsiness. There are voices underground. Aunt Hua raises her head again.
