ABSTRACT

The Curriculum, Leadership and Interaction Quality Rating Scales (CLIQRS) have been developed to support practice within early years provision for children aged from two to six years. While traditionally based on the notion of developmentally appropriate practice (DAP), over the years the original scales have been adapted and extended as research has improved a knowledge of what constitutes effective practice. Over the eight years that the SSTEW Scale has been available, it has been used by many educators, and by academics involved in early childhood research, across the world. However, the practices associated with SST were still relatively poor despite knowing that engaging in SST is a pedagogical strategy strongly associated with child outcomes. The SSTEW Scale is currently being used in at least ten countries and has been used in large-scale studies such as the Australian Fostering Effective Early Learning (FEEL) study and the UK Study of Early Education and Development project in England.
