ABSTRACT

Building on Chapter 8's communication skills, Chapter 9 goes deeper into exploring the impact of reproductive trauma on a relationship and on the birthing parent's partner. Because dads and same-sex partners can experience perinatal PTSD and reproductive trauma, too, this chapter is written to include their experience, and to involve them in the healing conversation. Discussions include exploring how the partner is impacted with possible secondary traumatization, and identifying their support and needs. Gender role strain during the transition to fatherhood can put additional stress on men during this time, with increased risks of mental health symptoms and decreased likelihood of them seeking help. Later the relationship itself is explored, including how not only becoming parents, but also experiencing trauma, have potentially impacted the couple's communication, roles, and intimacy. Activities are introduced to facilitate conversations around these topics. References to the Resources and support chapter are mentioned for further support options.
