ABSTRACT

In Judeo-Christian culture, the confession and atonement for committing sins brings us back to God and restores social purity. Prior to the Holocaust, there are across the world many historical examples of atrocities committed on racial groups under the power of foreign empires or in the commercial enterprise of slavery. The Holocaust marked a turning point in the world’s moral consciousness, bringing about the use of the word “genocide” and the concept of crimes against humanity. The Nuremberg Trials held after the end of World War Two were the first tribunals to treat individuals as responsible for war crimes. Keywords: Holocaust, genocide, slavery, crimes against humanity, Nuremberg Trials
