ABSTRACT

I look at how the NPC is grappling with diversity, equity, and inclusion amid the racial reckoning following national protests in the wake of the George Floyd killing by a police officer and the subsequent #AbolishGreeklife movement. I begin by looking at an example of the lackluster way national offices reacted to racist events, then argue that the continued tactic of trying to have it both ways—keeping loyalty intact with members while responding enough to outsiders—will be difficult to sustain in its current form. I show how national organizations are revealing—carefully—their sordid histories with examples from Delta Gamma's and Alpha Delta Pi's national magazines and websites as they struggle to use their histories to stay relevant, as well as share other reforms. I offer possibilities for tackling their lineage rather than cloaking or whitewashing it through more transparent, direct accountability and reconciliation.
