ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the structure under which cultural transduction takes place. Whether it is in institutional, formal, and traditional settings of legacy media outlets or through participatory, collective, and volunteer work in informal and interest-led communities, cultural transduction processes are taking place constantly. Hybridity and convergence are presented as conceptual categories that serve to discuss those two types of processes. The many modifications that cultural and media products experience to be received or appropriated in different cultural markets have produced new laboratories solely dedicated to this enterprise. The exploration of these types of organisation serves to highlight debates on intellectual property, cultural appropriation, and labour conditions in the media industries.
