ABSTRACT

There are three qualifying categories of colleges across the spectrum of selectivity: reach, target, and safety. Safety does not guarantee acceptance, but it surely increases the likelihood depending on a student’s credentials. A college list does not need to be extensive, but it should cover the three categories of colleges. A college list needs to have a backup college, but one that a student would be happy to attend if it becomes the only option.

Do not apply to a college just because someone told you to; you must have an interest in the institution. Balance is key. Aim for the stars, but also plan for more realistic options. There is no one-size-fits-all for all students. Everyone’s list will differ.
