ABSTRACT

Students should seek and obtain two letters of recommendation from content teachers.

Colleges will vary on how many letters of recommendations they will allow (usually from one to four). Some larger data-driven colleges may not accept LORs at all (e.g., Penn State University). Seek a letter from a teacher that knows you best, not necessarily from a class that you received an easy A. Occasionally, a student seeks a recommendation from an outside party—a third-party letter—perhaps from a coach, supervisor, or employer. While this is not necessary, sometimes this letter can provide insight on strengths and character that are not reflected in the HS letter. Seek a LOR well in advance—ask right before junior year ends.
