ABSTRACT

Surviving the college research, planning, and application process is something to be celebrated. Students now have their sights on the going-to-college experience. As this landscape unfolds, it’s important to decode the differences and nuances comparing high school to that of life on a college campus across three domains: academic, social, and personal. Admittedly, this is an area that, likely, most counselors may not review to a great level of depth. Some of these differences are clear, such as navigating an open campus with lush greens and parklike grounds with state-of-the-art technologies, labs, and libraries versus navigating one self-contained building with floors of classrooms in which many subjects are being taught throughout the day; while other nuances may not have been given much contemplation, such as professor versus teacher; 15 hours of class per week instead of 35; and navigating social contexts relating to cohabitation and personal boundaries with roommates.
