ABSTRACT

Accelerating learning can be facilitated by using digital technology to craft user's experiences. For example, through usability testing, user's behaviours can be tested, measured, and analysed almost continuously during product design and development, without going to the user's genba. The deployment of Internet of Things (IoT) makes data collection possible even for more traditional hardware products. Value Stream Mapping, one of the tools most used by newbies and Lean consultants, could be advantageously diverted from its traditional use to visualise user–product interactions. By mapping each step, the user VSM helps distinguish value-added experiences from wasteful ones. The ‘saw tooth model’ explained by George Box illustrates the iterative cycle between theory and practice. If a model exists (based on a theory or a physical principle), then the result of the hypothesis is predicted by deduction. The concept of trade-off is linked to the concept of decision-making since it corresponds to situations where a choice needs to be made between more variables.
