ABSTRACT

The roots of Lean in Engineering go back more than a hundred years, even though the term ‘Lean’ itself only dates back to the final decades of the last century. The word genius is a convergence of two Latin words genius and ingenium. The meaning has evolved, moving from the sense of the ‘genie’ emerging from Aladdin's lamp, to individuals with an innate intelligence beyond the norm (genius, as an attribute, can be regarded as a gift of nature, while talent can be acquired and learned). In a modern sense, the engineer is also the engine maker. Thus, the word engineering covers accumulated knowledge, and technical means and know-how used intentionally to find novel and ingenious solutions to practical problems in the field of design, development, and implementation of complex systems.
