ABSTRACT

This chapterintroduces the new critical term ‘midgetism’ in order to demonstrate that the socio-cultural discrimination people with dwarfism experience is influenced by both heightism and disablism. Building on the term, the chapter reclaims and repurposes the term midget for both analytical and advocacy purposes. To highlight some of the social consequences of midget entertainment, the chapter examines why people with dwarfism are photographed by strangers. Lastly, this chapter finishes with a discussion of ‘subtle midgetism’, which are the problematic attitudes that are harder to point out, as they are not necessarily meant to be offensive yet still contribute to the inequality people with dwarfism experience.
