ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the concept of the normate and non-normate space to unpack how dwarfism is represented in particular spaces, such as the freak show. The chapter focuses on the legacy of the freak show and shows how it is evident in different forms of modern-day midget entertainment. The first part focuses on the freak show and argues that a freak is culturally produced and that midget entertainers are an example of a modern-day freak. The second part examines a modern-day freak show based in China known as the Kingdom of Little People. Moving on, the chapter focuses on modern-day freak shows within western societies, including reality television shows, as well as the ability to hire out midget entertainers for numerous events. Lastly, the social consequences of midget entertainment are explored, as well as the resultant problematic attitudes which consider people with dwarfism as sub-human.
