ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the downplaying of midgetism through humour promoted by both average-sized comedians and by midget entertainers. This chapter focuses on how midget entertainment is defended, often through denial of midgetism by midget entertainers, the media and wider society. It is argued that these excuses, in this case that midget entertainment is just a form of comedy not to be taken seriously, contribute to the unequal standing of people with dwarfism in society. To aid in challenging the excuses, this chapter exposes some of the social implications of midget entertainment, including the case of Quaden Bayles.
