ABSTRACT

Sustainable outcomes are the pillars of a prosperous future, and they must be achieved in all the interconnected systems of the world. Overcoming the interconnected challenges of climate crisis, ecological breakdown and social injustice, coupled with rapid urbanisation and economic disparity, relies on the delivery of all the SDG promises, with sustainable outcomes lying at the heart of the built environment sector’s share of responsibilities. Buildings’ undisputable contribution to climate crisis can be revoked if renovation is treated with utmost attention and concern as part of the global built environment’s accelerated decarbonisation agenda. To live within planetary boundaries and minimise irreversible damages to the planet, systems thinking must form the core proposition for addressing the impacts of climate change. Recent evidence brings forward the measured benefits of integrated, innovative and sustainable buildings, insisting that Capital Expenditure and Operating Expense budgets can be aligned to unlock a built environment’s whole life value.
