ABSTRACT

This chapter first considers factors that may influence recovery in aphasia. It outlines the delivery of stroke rehabilitation in the UK, before focussing on specific aphasia treatments. Examples of therapy are presented which aim to improve language skills, enhance communication, and address the social and emotional consequences of aphasia. Treatments involving family members are also described. The role of technology in aphasia rehabilitation is discussed and illustrated including: the use of language practice apps, compensatory uses of technology, and the remote delivery of intervention. A virtual world designed with and for people with aphasia is described. Throughout the chapter, studies from the literature are used to illustrate therapy approaches and inform the reader about how treatment outcomes are researched. The chapter ends by considering what constitutes a successful outcome in aphasia, with the real-life example of Sarah Scott.
