ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the final years of Salazar's life, from his enforced retirement due to illness through to his death in 1970. The manner of his succession is discussed, as is the way his shadow continued to hang over his successor, Marcelo Caetano seen by many within the regime as too open to change.
