ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the counsellors to the ideas, practice and problems of marriage counselling. Counsellors have been asked to read through the appropriate training booklets and notes before each section and are given a list of essential reading, recommended reading and further reading, through which they will work as the basic training course progresses. It follows that if the training course were to include instructions on how to be an effective counsellor, this: would give the impression to the new counsellors that a similar sort of directive could be given to clients on the way to solve their marriage problems. It may be thought that this is rather early to allow the new counsellors to start work, but counselling is a skill that can be learned effectively only by being practised.
