ABSTRACT

One pertinent character from Syriac literature who came in interaction with the Holy Land and whose story is significant in any discussion on the real or imagined travel or pilgrimage to Palestine is the figure of the controversial monk Barsauma. His hagiographic life documents that before and during his formation as an ardent believer for the faith of his church he made journeys to the Holy City. These pilgrimages are connected with miraculous actions. All these epitomise major stages from Barsauma’s life devoted to extreme zeal for the ‘correct’ belief and against those who migrate beyond the interreligious and inter-Christian border faith he strongly defend.
