ABSTRACT

This chapter delves into the relationship between local culture and place, investigating how the unique characteristics of a place can be reflected in its design. Connectedness and participation in a city are then emphasized in the design process, followed by a discussion on “place narratives.” The chapter provides principles for urban design that go beyond mere technicalities of form and function. Instead, the focus is on creating places that reflect the identity and aspirations of the community and contribute to their social sustainability and quality of life, thereby promoting local culture. Overall, the chapter aims to illustrate how urban design can promote meaningful, unique, and culturally relevant spaces that enhance a sense of place.
