ABSTRACT

Obesity and inactivity are growing global public health challenges evident particularly in Western societies. Urban design holds the potential to lessen the negative effects of these challenges and introduce healthier living. This chapter explores urban planning concepts that promote healthy and active lifestyles. To frame the issue, the chapter first explores obesity, inactivity and mental health problems in the context of urban design. Alongside these challenges, solutions for retooling cities are suggested, including designing outdoor play areas for children, adolescents, adults and seniors.
