ABSTRACT
Dense urban areas can be places of anonymity and isolation. Those same spaces can also provide ample opportunities for interactions, with destinations, attractions and accessible gathering spots. This chapter investigates the relations between places of interaction and social sustainability. It discusses historical development patterns pertaining to social spaces and lists their typologies and their designs. Finally, the potential and importance of Third Places are examined, alongside guidelines on incorporating social gathering spaces into urban design.
