ABSTRACT
As planners seek to meet the needs of the population in rapidly urbanized cities and foster a parallel economic growth, the importance of preserving existing urban environments cannot be overstated. The preservation of cultural heritage sites is an important economic and social strategy to achieve sustainable and vibrant spaces for people to live, work and play. Urban preservation and sustainability are interconnected principles that help build livable and efficient communities. This chapter explores the merit and practices of preserving urban environments and the associated dangers of gentrification by investigating large-scale preservations in residential, commercial and mixed-use areas.
